CHASING AND CAPTURING

[3] The ladder (SHICHO)

This capturing technique is a very famous one, called ladder (SHICHO in Japanese). After black 1 white stone can't escape...

  Nice, isn't ?

  Wrong direction...white is safe now.

The point is: DON"T LET THE OPPONENT TO GET MORE THAN 2 LIBERTIES! After black 1 here white A is helpless as white will get 2 liberties (just the same as before...)

  Success for black!

Failure here...so we must be very careful when attepting to capture with a SHICHO!

  For example here...

...everything seemed to be ok but the white marked stone interfered the shicho so white can't be captured...

When running is impossible white can play moves like 2, forcing black to capture, then playing once more. This is a positive way of thinking.
